The GMAT is a cause of anxiety among prospective MBA students. Here are some tips to get you through the process.

  1. Know your Needed GMAT Score!! Some MBA programs have a minimum GMAT admission score.  Others… (like Canisius) combine the GMAT score with your undergraduate GPA. An MBA recruiter will be able to tell you what your needed GMAT score is….or the admissions minimum requirement. If you are interested in knowing what your needed GMAT score is for Canisius MBA program, please call 888-2140 or you can email me at collin31@canisius.edu.

  2. Ignore the Student GMAT Average!! When researching admission standards, do not be discouraged about average accepted GMAT scores.  Each student is unique….some may do well on standardized tests and others may not.  If your score is below the average, it does not mean you will not get into the program.  All of your achievements are taken into consideration for admission standards.

  3. Take a Pre-test!! There are endless resources and tutoring programs offered for the GMAT.  Taking the pre-test will asses what resources are right for you! A rule of thumb…if you are testing around the needed GMAT score. Some practice questions found in any GMAT prep-book should be adequate.  If you need to score 100 points over your pretest score, you may want to look into a tutoring program.  Kaplan will provide a free pre-test. Go to www.kaplan.com for more information!

  4. Don’t be a Smarty Pants!! Ok! So we all enjoy bragging about test scores.  However the only people that are interested in your GMAT score is the admissions committee. The committee is only interested in your specific needed GMAT score.  It is nice to have some wiggle room…but 100 points above the needed score is just a waste of studying.  Don’t worry… you will get plenty of study time while completing your MBA.

  5. Wiggle Room for Testing Jitters! Prospective students usually do not do as well on the actual exam as they do on pre-tests.  It is good to have 50 points of “wiggle room” between your pre-test and needed score before you attempt the exam

  6. Get it Done! Procrastination is a road block to progress!!  If you are pre-testing at your needed score. Just take it!! Go to www.mba.com, and you will find convent times and locations to take the exam.

  7. Find a Partner!! If you do need to do some preparation for the exam, find a study-buddy who is also interested in the program.  It is hard to study when you have so many other responsibilities! Finding a time to get together with another anxious perspective MBA student will help manage study time.

Get the School Code! Your GMAT score can automatically be sent to the schools you are applying to.  Call the Graduate Business Office for the school code
